After watching the film “The Little Mermaid”, “Percy Jackson and The Olympic Series” the characters of sea nymph and mermaid become so prominent. They suddenly take the viewers into the magical land.
These Characters are from Greek Mythology. They are the minor god and goddess of this Mythology. In Greek Mythology every element of the Universe is under the control of a different kind of god and goddess. The Sea Nymph is an ancient group of god and goddess which live in the ocean.
The Mermaid is mainly a beautiful frictional character who has a human-like shape in the upper body with the tail of a fish. It is mainly the aquatic creature in folklore which is described divinely. Mermaids can be men too, which are called merman.
Mermaids are the worldwide famous frictional characters. Their stories are told in many parts of the world like Mesopotamia and Eastern Mediterranean, Britain and Ireland, Western Europe, Greece, Korea, Japan etc. Many links are different and many links are the same. But mermaids are highly described in Greek Mythology.
In Greek Mythology, the sea nymph is the natural deities of the ocean. They symbolise all kinds of goodness, vastness, and fish of the sea. Nereids are the legend among the sea nymphs. They are shapeshifters. One of the shapes is half human and half fish. This shape is called the Mermaid.
Legends of sea nymphs are the 50 daughters of Nerus, the son of Earth and Doris, the daughter of Oceanus. They are called Nereids and their brothers are called Nerites. They live with their father at the Golden Palace in Aegean sea. Some of them are very famous, mothers of brave sons and daughters which create another story in folklore like Thetis the mother of Achilles, Amphitities the wife of Poseidon.
Some legends say that Nereids are good but Mermaids are moody. Nereids are very beautiful young girls who play in the ocean, sing beautifully, and dance around their father, crowned with corals, dressed beautifully like princesses.
In myth, they help the sailor, show them the correct way. They help those who help them. They are such beautiful young ladies who lure the men. Their beauty can mesmerise the entire ship into rock, it can also be called hypnotise.
Whenever they are angry, they can take revenge brutally according to the English literature. They influence nature and can change the wind direction to manipulate the sailor. They can summon terrible storms and hurricanes capable of destroying entire ships and even coastal towns.
Other than Nereids there are also many kinds of mermaids. These folklore influence the art, novel, civilization of western culture greatly. Even these names influence astronomy like one of the moon mane of Neptune is Nereids. The famous sculpture of Copenhagen “The Little Mermaid” bears the magnificent, charming magic of Mythology.
